Falyn Shilts has been living with Type 1 Diabetes since 1996 and understands the struggles her fellow community faces, on a physical, medical and emotional level.
Let’s face it: The medical support from docs really starts and ends with your numbers.
But Diabetes Lifestyle Academy takes it beyond that, where we need the most support: The day to day and how it impacts us emotionally and mentally.
When Falyn was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 14 years old, she was told this is the best disease you can be diagnosed with because you can do anything living with this disease. She accepted the fact that this was life, and dealt with it. There were struggles along the way, and definitely days where she wanted to give up. As she moved on to college, living in NYC, getting married and having children, she quickly realized that there were so many people she encountered who were really having a hard time with this disease.
Falyn’s pivotal moment in her own T1D journey was when she was pregnant with her first baby in 2009, and the medical professionals were telling her to take doses of insulin that she knew would put her at hypoglycemic levels.
In that moment, she realized that her success and health needed to be taken into her own hands. Diabetes is commonly viewed only as a set of numbers, and that it doesn’t take into account personal relationships with food, body, mental health, and each person’s unique needs, lifestyles, and patterns.
